Chief’s Are Through Their Bye, Headed to Week 6

With week 5 officially in the books, there is one thing I can say for certain about the standings and what the landscape looks like across the league. And that one thing is who knows? The early part of the 2026 season has been a roller coaster of I told you so, that’s what I thought, and then how did that happen and no way!? The Niner’s and Seahawks look the part, as well as our beloved Chiefs. The Bills continue to be the late blooming Chargers we know they are. The Raiders looked like a legitimate playoff team then proceed to get boat raced in Foxboro by a team that was basically left for dead in week 3, then beats the Bills in Orchard Park, followed by the drubbing of the silver and black slot machine warriors, and now look like the team we saw last year. The Chargers continue to find ways to lose, what’s new, the Bears get run ruled by the Packers, even though the Packers looked like a top 10 draft pick squad through the first four weeks of the season. Let’s not forget the Cowboys losing to a winless Buc’s team lead by a UDFA QB in his first road start. Then the Eagles losing Lane Johnson mid week, then somehow losing to a 4-1 Jags team despite kicking a “game-winning” field goal with 8 sec left, then somehow deciding to not kick it out of the back of the endzone, 50 yd kick return, 1 sec left, backup long snapper who hadn’t snapped a ball since high school, no problem, Jags walk it off in London. And Don’t even get me started on the debacle between the Giants and Commanders. The NFC East this week provided more drama than a Young and the Restless marathon on Valentine’s Day. The NFL may need to change its name to WTF.
But, it’s on to week 6 in the NFL. And what was thought to be an inconvenient bye week for the Kingdom, actually may have been a blessing. With the Tyquan Thornton injury, Rashee Rice and his hamstring, and a nagging calf that has slowed Stone Cold Chris Jones to start the season, as well as our M.I.A. LT. The early break may have allowed the Chiefs to do some adjusting and healing at an opportune time. Our old friend Justin Watson has re-joined the team on the practice squad, and rumors of an almost certain reunion with a certain speedy feline saturate social media. Kenneth Walker III and Patrick Mahomes are in the conversation for league MVP, and if the odds makers are right this week, the Chiefs could have a stranglehold on the AFC West before Halloween. The Chiefs are 4-0 and we are so back! Right?
Yes and no I would say. The defense has been unable to get off the field on third downs, and unable to generate a sack since the spanking of the Donkeys in week 1, despite having a top 10 pressure rate in the league. The Chiefs find themselves 31st in sacks. They have been good against the run, but are not getting enough defensive wins as I call them, (plays gaining less that 2 yards), and are finding themselves in 3rd and manageable situations. Allowing teams to extend drives, eat clock, and keep K9 and MVPat on the sidelines. Then there is our dilemma at wide receiver. Tyquan Thornton was beginning to emerge as a legitimate threat not just on the deep ball, but in the intermediate zone as well. And how long can Walker sustain 25-30 touches per game? Can Travis Kelce keep up this level of production? I feel confident in K9 and Killa Trav. And confident in the O-line with Simmons back in the fold in a week or two. Hoping he can stay in the lineup that is. I am also confident in Steve Spagnuolo and the defense’s ability to keep improving and be a top 10 unit by seasons end.
As for our matchup with the Chargers on Sunday…don’t be expecting a blowout at Arrowhead this weekend. While all the stats and records say the Chiefs will win by two scores, keep in mind this is a divisional game. Against a team that should have won two straight. And a week 7 trip to the defending champs house, and a reunion for Kenneth Walker III with his former team. I don’t want to say this is a trap game, but it has a lot of the trappings of one. 5-0 with a 3 game lead over Denver, 4 game lead over Vegas, and a 6 game lead over the Bolts on Oct. 19th has a very, very nice sound to it though!!
