The Chiefs self-destruct in epic fashion, fall to Denver 28-24

This past Sunday was definitely one Chiefs Kingdom will want to forget, if they can. After being embarrassed and exposed by the Seattle Seahawks in week 7, the Chiefs and their fans were hoping for a bounce back game against their division foes, and hopefully in the process, take a stranglehold on the AFC West division. And for 3 quarters, it looked like that was going to be exactly how thing would play out. The Chiefs were playing good football, not great, and were leading 24-13 going into the fourth quarter. After holding the Donkeys to just 158 total yards of offense to that point, Denver found the endzone early in the fourth quarter and converted on a 2 point conversion to cut the lead to 24-21. After trading scoreless drives, the Chiefs found themselves looking at a 4th and 2, at the Denver 38 yard line. So, the Chiefs elected for a Harrison Butker 54 yard FG attempt. Oh, and did I mention it was pouring rain at this point? Butker would miss the try wide right, and is now 2 of 11 on kicks over 50 yards in the last 2 seasons. With great field position, the Broncos would score on 2 plays and put the Chiefs down 28-24 with just under 2 minutes to go in the game. But, the Chiefs offense was up to the task, and marched right down the field and found themselves with 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line with 35 seconds left and one timeout still in their back pocket. A broken play where Xavier Worthy somehow forgot that receivers are supposed to come back towards their quarterback when the play breaks down, and then a stuffed run by Kenneth Walker III followed by a time out. Patrick Mahomes found Rashee Rice in the end zone for the winning score. But wait…..there’s a flag on the play. One of the 8 flags for over 100 yards in penalties the Chiefs tallied up on the day, for false start on Jalen Moore. One last gasp from the six led to a Denver sack of Mahomes, brought by pressure from where left G Mike Calliendo was playing for starter Kingsley Suamataia, who was mysteriously benched again for the second time in 3 games, and the game was over.
Now this is the point where I would turn the page and look forward to a matchup with the spunky, yet still hapless Jets in week 9. However, the PTSD from last season, or maybe flashbacks 2012, have me in a sort of way right now. I like to post on Wednesdays because I can sit back and ruminate on the prior weeks game and give some reasoned and grounded takes. But this week I am experiencing an overwhelming feeling of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me going on. I am seeing the exact same penalties, no urgency on offense, the same tired and very predictable route concepts. The same lack of patience running the ball as soon as we get behind. The same mysterious explanations from this head coach. And the same frustrated look on Patrick Levon Mahomes’ face multiple times a game. The same inability for any receiver to get open partly because of scheme, partly because of talent. The same lack of the pass rush to get quick wins and put the QB on the ground. And to add to it, this year our Safety play has been sub par at best.
I feel like Seth Keysor, and Matty Lane of KCSN can explain the need for a WR better than I can. The Chiefs are now in must win mode and our playoffs are starting in week 9 as far as I’m concerned.
